There’s a rhythm to stable life that doesn’t quite match the rest of the world.
While the world beyond the yard is stirring to the sound of alarms and kettles boiling for that ever so needed morning cuppa, we’re already knee-deep in hay and horse hair. The morning sky hasn’t yet decided what kind of day it’s going to be, but we’ve got a fork in one hand and a feed bucket in the other, moving through our morning as if led by muscle memory, heart first.
This is the side of equestrian life that doesn’t get posted on Instagram as often.
The bit no one claps for.
The quiet, unseen devotion.
Because to be an equestrian... truly... is to live a life of ritual.
It’s the familiar creak of the stable door. The rustle of bedding beneath their hooves. The smell of feed before sunrise and the sound of soft breathing in the dark. It’s brushing away the day’s dust as you lose track of time, finding calm in the steady rhythm of the bristles. It’s pulling on muddy boots without a second thought, because they’ve long since stopped being just boots, they’re part of the uniform of love.
This life asks everything of you.
And still, we give it.
We do it when we’re tired. We do it in wind, in frost, in sideways rain.
We do it on Christmas morning and in the height of summer, under golden skies and grey ones alike.
Because to us, it’s not a chore. It’s devotion.
Whether you’ve spent your life chasing rosettes and riding your way through the ranks, or whether you’ve simply sought the quiet company of your horse on a Sunday afternoon...
you are an equestrian.
It doesn’t matter whether you’ve galloped cross-country or only ever walked bareback through a field. It doesn’t matter if you’re schooling for your next competition or just trying to find five minutes to brush the mud off your pony’s mane before the sun sets.
What matters is that you show up.
Every. Single. Day.
Because when your horse looks up and sees you coming, they don’t care if you’ve won ribbons. They don't care if you're wearing the latest "Matchy Matchy". They don't care if your boots are designer or a pair of old wellies from Tesco. They care that you’ve come. That you’re there. Again. Still. Always.
We all have our stories.
The ones who carried us through childhood, or into motherhood.
The ones who stood steady through heartbreaks and stood quietly as we soaked their coats with our tears.
The ones who taught us to trust, slow down and appreciate every little step.
The ones who waited patiently for us to come home after school, or after work, or after life got too loud.
And every story is worthy of being remembered.
That’s what I see - what I feel - when I’m behind the lens.
As your photographer, I don’t just come to take "pretty pictures". I come to honour something sacred.
To honour the brush-marks on a dappled coat. The lead rope that’s fraying but still strong. The arms wrapped around a neck that’s known your heartbeat for years.
To capture not just a horse and rider, but a life lived together. These portraits aren’t about perfection. They’re about truth.
About the way you glance at them when you think no one’s looking. About the softness that comes into your voice when you say their name. About the deep, wordless knowing that exists between you, The one forged through early mornings, late nights, muddy days, and quiet, shared moments in between.
It’s a legacy. A life. A love.
And it’s the same whether your tack room smells of saddle soap and medals, or if your “yard” is a patch of field you’ve carved into something beautiful with your own two hands.
We’re united by something bigger than results.
We’re united by ritual.
So here’s to the ones who rise before the sun, who carry water buckets with aching arms, who sweep the aisle one more time before locking the gate.
Here’s to the hands that heal cuts, lift hooves, tie rugs, and wipe away the tears no one else sees.
Here's to the ones who work countless hours and long days to give it all to the animals we so adore.
Here’s to the joy in the smallest progress.
The heartbreak of goodbye.
The strength of staying.
Here’s to you... the Equestrian.
If your heart feels full reading this or maybe if you’ve seen your own story between the lines - then perhaps now is the time to honour it.
Let’s create a portrait that holds not just your horse, but your whole journey. A quiet nod to the everyday rituals. A tribute to the devotion.
Because it’s not just a lifestyle.
It’s a love story.
And it deserves to be remembered.
